New Zealand’s food criticism is too cosy, our hospitality strategy is siloed, food security is ignored and our outrage is misdirected. The Michelin debate just made it impossible to ignore.
Great piece, Tash. I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot over the last few days. I mostly feel like the more I know the less sure I am about what I think, so appreciate you adding to the discussion.
It’s a complex one for certain, I at least would prefer meaningful discourse where everyone can grapple with the framework of what Tourism New Zealand’s job is … and the implications of what is left to do! Appreciate the dialogue and your recent piece. What a story about reviewing, correct? Anonymity has a lot going for it.
Great piece. And you’ve highlighted the true problem we have. Eat NZ’s Angela Clifford and others have been taking about a cohesive food strategy for some years now but it’s never imp enough to make it on the governments agenda. Absolutely agree with you that TNZ is simply delivering to its mandate as they did with trying to get all those Bollywood movies shot in Queenstown
Super astute. This nails it: "Because people think it should. Because there’s no clear understanding of what’s government’s job versus what’s commercial media’s job versus what’s industry’s job when it comes to food culture."

Great write up Tash, couldn't agree more with Al on his thoughts, and the other contributors of course

Excellent overview - thanks!
